is it a bird?

It looks like a broken branch, but yep, it’s a bird - a tawny frogmouth. It’s active at night and when roosting by day it blends so well with its surrounds that it is almost impossible to see.

It sits stiff and upright, its head upturned and eyes narrowed into slits, keeping all intruders under close scrutiny.

While we were photographing it, it kept up it’s ‘I’m a stick’ routine. The only thing that gave it away was the slow rotation of the head in order to keep us in view at all times.
